Tikal Natural Mendoza 2017

92 Vinous | 91 Wine Advocate

From one of Mendoza’s premiere wineries comes a delicious Malbec and Syrah blend in its most natural expression. Plucked from a gorgeous biodynamic vineyard in the mountains of Argentina, this has a beautiful pomegranate color and aroma of fresh red cherries with light French oak undertones. The palate is fresh and lively with black raspberry and spiced mocha notes. It’s another great wine from a fabulous source.

A great companion to BBQ or burgers, but also incredibly easy and fun to drink on its own.

"Tikal was founded by Ernesto Catena, a 4th generation winemaker of Italian descent who, having spent a part of his life working as a designer and being a fervent student of Renaissance humanism, sees it as his mission to transform everything in his wine world into art, from growing the grapes to making wine to selling it.

From the beginning, Ernesto searched for people with a strong creative drive to make sure that the right values stood at the core of the company. Teamwork is at the center of everything they do, from farming to winemaking and business decisions. They want their work to be fun, intense, and meaningful. They don’t fear mistakes, but rather they want to learn from them because for them that’s the only way to learn. They strive for perfection not only in their wines but also in the spirit with which they make them. To share a meal, to enjoy the fruits of their labor-these are the things that matter to them." 92 Vinous – “A blend of Malbec with 40% Syrah from Vistaflores, aged for eight months in 20% new oak, four-fifths French and one-fifth American. Bright purple in hue, it delivers aromas of red currant and raspberry plus hints of flesh and violet over an inviting mint note that is then followed by sweet spices kept in a pencil box. The palate is flavorsome, loose and sugary with a smooth, thirst-quenching fluidity.”
91 Wine Advocate – “The blend of 60% Malbec and 40% Syrah, the 2017 Natural is a brand that was born before the movement of “natural” wines, but now Ernesto Catena works in biodynamic agriculture and got interested in “natural” wines. The Syrah fermented with full clusters and fermented together with the destemmed Malbec. It has a young profile with some aromas of beeswax and honey, wild berries and herbs, pure and clean. It matured in concrete vats, and it didn’t see any oak to preserve the wild character. It’s juicy and has an approachable and soft palate with tasty flavors, good freshness and no heat.”
