The Paring Pinot Noir 2018

92 Jeb Dunnuck

This wine offers lovely red and dark cherry fruit, silky tannins, aromas of cherry, earth and a hint of oak (35% new French, the rest neutral barrels) – all at a terrific price! Sourced from vineyard blocks in the cool areas of Ballard Canyon, Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley that are either too young or don’t fit into the vintage style of the highly acclaimed Jonata and The Hilt wines.

Add to the mix that it is made by Matt Dees, the wines for its big sister wineries Jonata and The Hilt and you have a lot of pedigree and talent being poured into this delicious, everyday-affordable pinot – essentially the little brother to these much pricier siblings! Matt describes it as follows “Completely seductive wine. Nose of blackberries and rosemary. Succulent and sweet red fruit. Savory notes and mouth coating tannins round out this harmonious and complete pinot noir.” We completely agree!! Cheers – Chris Cree MW, Cree Wine Co.

Armed with a degree in Soil Science from the University of Vermont and vintages at Staglin in Napa, California and Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, winemaker Matt Dees has an intrinsic feel for wine, from dirt to glass. Curious and experimental by nature, Matt’s approach to winemaking is grounded in the vineyard first and foremost: attuned to the vines, the weather, the soil, Matt seems almost to be a part of the vineyard itself.

Matt comes to wine with an untethered philosophy, a mindset embodied in The Paring. At the core of these wines one finds a wide-ranging exploration of style, vineyards and blending. When he’s not working with The Paring, Matt can be found making the wines for its big sister wineries- Jonata and The Hilt. – The Paring

The 2018 Pinot Noir sports a medium ruby/purple color as well as earthy cherry and raspberry fruits, violets, and peppery herb-like aromas and flavors. It’s nicely textured, with terrific balance as well as outstanding purity of fruit, all making for a smoking value in Pinot Noir. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years or so.
