Red Car Chardonnay Estate Fort Ross-Seaview 2018
94 points, Wine Enthusiast – Fresh and stony in texture, this lovely, light-bodied white expresses anise and oyster shell, with a touch of brine. Textured and complex, it delivers plenty of nuanced apple, pear and Meyer lemon, within a foundation of structure and grace.
92 Vinious Media – “The 2018 Chardonnay Estate Vineyard is another gorgeous wine in this range. Bright, airy and finely cut, the 2018 offers striking translucency while not being overly austere. White flowers, mint, crushed flowers and citrus peel all infuse the 2018 with tons of detail and nuance.”
The Fort Ross Seaview Estate Chardonnay is from grapes sourced in their original estate vineyard, planted in 2005. Located at the northwestern corner of King Ridge Road above Fort Ross on the coastline of Sonoma County at 900-1000 feet, the site is framed by giant coastal redwoods and bordered to the west by the cold, foggy Pacific Ocean. Neighbors read like a who’s who of top tier Pinot and Chard producers – Hirsch, Marcassin, Flowers, Peay and more – all pioneers in this cool coastal region.
Cool, clean and focused, with incredible minerality and drive, white flowers, crisp apple tones and citrus notes, this very much leans towards the Burgundian side in terms of style, and is a great example of the style of Chardonnay this cool region can produce. Just a baker’s dozen cases on offer – don’t delay!.
What makes this wine so great? It starts with an exceptional vineyard, densely planted to multiple clones of Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay. And not just any old Chardonnay – it is the Old Wente clone that was selected over the course of decades by Larry Hyde specifically for the small size of its clusters and mineral flavor profile. These differences are revealed in this distinctly unique and terroir-driven Chardonnay. The vines are mainly Ohlson Sandstone and are farmed using organic methods. The wine is fermented using native yeasts in neutral, French oak barrels, then aged for 10 months on the lees in French oak, 87% neutral, 13% new. Just 195 cases produced.
