Perryville Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
One of the great things about having been in the wine business for over forty years are the great people I have met and the relationships built up over the years. So when friends and owners of Jean Edwards Cellars, and their winemaker ~~Kian Tavakoli (who I’ve known since my days in the MW program), told me they had a few barrels of Napa Cabernet available if we were interested in our own cuvee, we jumped at the chance.
And this is not just ordinary Napa Cabernet, but one made from grapes sourced in a very famous vineyard in the hills on the east side of the valley (the name of which we can’t put in print). Suffice to say that wines from this site start at about $125 per bottle and rocket up from there, but we got an outstanding deal, offering it for a limited time at just $49.99 per bottle.
We were sent four barrel samples to taste and blend, the only caveat was that we had to buy the whole barrel – not just part. So we began tasting – first each barrel on its own, then 50/50 blends, 25/75 blends and every possible permutation until we found the one that popped, and today we have the very first Perryville Cellars Napa Cabernet!
As for the winemaking, Kian started his career at Opus One (we don’t mess around!!) where he spent four years and then moved on to become assistant winemaker at Clos du Val, eventually heading up their red wine Reserve program. In 2017 and in 2018, Kian was named by Napa Valley Life Magazine as one of the "top 3 winemakers in Napa Valley” and he was a finalist once again for this honor in 2020. He certainly outdid himself on this wine, keeping the oak in check with one year old barrels and focusing on the incredible pedigree of the fruit this site produces.
It’s deep ruby purple in color, with a beautifully aromatic bouquet of dark fruit, dried herbs, subtle oak, and hints of mocha and espresso. On the palate it is rich and layered, with a solid core of dark fruit that hints at its upscale fruit sources. Tannins are ripe and supple, and the finish lingers on and on.
We are so happy to offer this overachieving Napa Cabernet to mark the start of so many great things to come! Timing couldn’t be better as its arrival coincides with the launch of the Cree Wine Company Tasting Room. We owe a huge thank you to John, Karen and Kian for such an excellent wine with which to kick off the Cree Wine Company!
