One of the consistently best buys in rosé every year!
This beautiful Chinon rosé from the Loire Valley region of Chinon is always one of my favorite wines every year! I consistently put it right up there with the heavy hitting classics – Clos Sainte Magdeleine from Cassis, Terrebrune in Bandol, and Vacheron in Sancerre to name a few – the difference is the price! And while that trio is worth every penny they charge, this gem from Raffault is less than half the price – on sale for an amazing $15.99! Less than a dozen cases available, so don’t delay – jump into the season with this spring and summer classic!
It is 100% hand-harvested Cabernet Franc, 50% certified-organic estate fruit (from sandy, gravelly, flat parcels along the Vienne) and 50% from a neighbor who is in the process of converting to organic farming. Half of the fruit is pressed directly as whole clusters and the other half is saigné (bleeding of the pale juice of their red Chinon early in fermentation).Only native yeasts are used, fermentation is in stainless steel tanks.
The result is a salmon/pink colored rose with lovely hints of red fruits, savory earth hints, and floral top-notes. On the palate it is lively, focused, and refreshing – dry with lovely acidity, tension and a hint of tannin. Utterly food friendly and versatile, perfect all on its own or with salads, seafood, grilled vegetables, light meats, cheeses, charcuterie and so much more.

Vinous 92 (Jason Wilson)
From Raffault’s top site, with 50 year old vines on chalky clay-limestone soils. Aged for one year in foudre. Light ruby in color. Bright, fruity nose of cherry and raspberry. Light and precise in the mouth, nimble, soft and supple, delivering more warm red fruit and a lengthy finish.
View From the Cellar 94 (John Gilman)
made from fifty-plus year-old vines in the heart of this excellent vineyard, is outstanding in 2014. This is always a cuvée built for the cellar and the 2014 vintage is no exception. The bouquet is pure and promising, offering up scents of red and dark berries, cigar smoke, a complex base of soil tones, a touch of tree bark, a hint of meatiness and a topnote of menthol. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very transparent in personality, with a rock solid core of fruit, ripe, chewy tannins, good focus and grip and a long, nascently complex and beautifully soil-driven finish. This is outstanding juice in the making! 2024-2065.
