It is sad to say, but one of the only bright spots of the whole pandemic situation are the occasional great buys that come our way due to all of the restaurants that have been closed or operating on a very limited basis – we hope that is finally coming to an end!! Meanwhile this incredible bargain just fell in our laps – a superb crisp, refreshing white that is perfect for summer.

It is made from 100% Loureiro grapes, which is a white variety native to this region of Portugal. The vineyards are located in the Valley Lima in Vinho Verde that have an average age of 20+ years at an elevation of 150 meters above sea level. Soils are granitic soils, farming is organic (practicing) and the grapes are hand harvested. Fermentation is in stainless steel with wild yeast, and then the wine is aged on the lees in stainless steel tanks for 5 months.

91 Points John Gilman – View from the Vineyard

91 Points, View from the Cellar, John Gilman – “The 2019 Vinho Verde “Dócil” from Dirk Niepoort is composed entirely of Loureiro, grown on granite. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and given five months aging on its fine lees in tank, prior to bottling. It does not go through malo. The 2019 version is bright and complex, jumping from the glass in a fine blend of lime, green apple, white flowers, a nice touch of brininess and a fine base of stony minerality. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and has a touch of CO2 for bounce on the backend, with an excellent core of fruit, fine focus and grip and a long, zesty finish. This is very good Vinho Verde. 2020-2028.
