Nichols Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2019

Britt makes this deep, dark and concentrated Cabernet from grapes grown in two well-known vineyards from the steep, rocky hillsides of St Helena just northwest of Lake Hennessey from dry-farmed, Napa-Green Certified vines that produce tiny, thick-skinned berries. Similar wine of this caliber, from these vineyards will easily cost two times as much.

But with Britt’s connections and ability to source top-notch fruit and create a lush, richly textured Cabernet with loads of dark blackberry, cassis, a hint of graphite and nicely integrated oak notes, you have and under $30 Cabernet that rivals many a Napa Cabernet at two times the price and more. I am an enormous fan of Britt’s namesake Nichols 2018 and if you tried it, I’m sure you are too. But the 2019s are even more opulent and enjoyable.

“In this first concerted look at the 2019s from barrel, I can conclude that this is a vintage that is going to make a lot of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon lovers, in particular, very happy. The vintage has produced a good many high-quality wines, generally of a classic, ripe, plush and beautifully expressive style. What’s more, there appears to be a good consistency of quality, from bottom to top…”

The 2019s are going to be hard to resist. They are a return to big fruit forward wines – that are almost too delicious right out of the gate. I worry most will be long gone before they’re even allowed to age at all, much less the 20+ years potential that most have ahead of them.
