We have finally received one of the most exciting wines we have sold since we opened (with the exception of our first Perryville Cellars Cabernet) the incredible Montepeloso Alpha 2020!
This wine, a private blend made for just a few prestigious restaurant accounts in Europe, is sooo secret it isn’t even on the winery’s website. It is essentially a souped up version of Montepeloso’s A-Quo – itself a perennial best buy and 92+ pointer from the press.
This year one of those precious European accounts balked, and a palate of this delicious baby super Tuscan became available. We jumped in and took it off their hands, and are happy to offer it up today, the first and only in the US to get a drop of this precious vino!
We tasted the Alpha back in the early fall, a barrel sample flown in for us to taste. At the time it was still a little youthful, yet VERY promising, showing great depth of fruit and amazing balance and character. We concurred that by the time this is bottled and comes together in a few months it is really going to be outrageously good – especially at under $20!
This week the finished wine arrived – and just as we hoped it was polished and complete, rounded out with time in the bottle before release and getting over the rigors of shipping. WOW! was our unanimous reaction – AJ, fire up some pasta! We simply love this wine, and are thrilled to be able to share it with you today.
The estate’s top wine cuvees, Gabbro and Nardo, consistently rack up scores in the 94-96 range but generally need time in the cellar to reach their potential. Plus they will set you back $90-125 per bottle.
The bottom line is this is a superb and serious “baby” super Tuscan from the heart of Maremma from the great Montepeloso Estate. It exudes a warm and sunny personality, captured in the sunny climate where it was raised near the sparkling Mediterranean coast, linked inexorably to the classic grapes it is made from. It delivers way above its modest price. Stop in, have a taste, and try before you buy – or just take our word for it – you will love this new Italian Classic! Enjoy now and over the next 3-5 years plus. The wine arrives Thursday, and is open to taste starting Friday. Take advantage of our one time introductory case price of $17.98 per bottle – valid through the end of the month – don’t miss it!
