La Colline aux Fossiles Chardonnay 2019

94 Points Jeb Dunnuck – "All Chardonnay brought up in used demi-muids, the 2019 La Colline Aux Fossiles sports a medium gold hue to go with terrific stone fruits, caramelized citrus, white flowers, and honeysuckle-like aroma and flavors as well as a beautiful sense of minerality that emerges with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully textured, with a layered mouthfeel and a great finish, it’s another knockout Chardonnay from the team of Eric Solomon and Jean-Marc Lafage."

"What the heck?" might best fit our reaction when presented with this crazy wine. A 94-point Chablis-like Chardonnay from southern France’s Roussillon region, a warm, rugged, sunny region known for best solid, slightly rustic, full bodied reds? The answer is a resounding you better believe it! And it is stunningly delicious for the price.

This is what happens when you team up long time importer Eric Solomon with winemaker Jean-Marc Lafage, along with a special vineyard located along the Têt river valley in the Roussillon region deep in the south of France. What they found here was just 2.4 hectares of 25-40 year old vines in a special terroir where Chardonnay grapes thrive in the deep red clay soils laced with gravels washed down from the surrounding mountains over millennia.

This is a sterner terroir, warmer and drier than the vineyards near the sea. The name Colline aux Fossiles comes from the old, weathered fossils mixed in this site’s gravelly soils, and makes a wine uniquely its own. Sustainably farmed, hand harvested, fermented and aged in tanks and 500L French oak barrels. Nothing fancy here, just great terroir, a classic grape variety, and honest non-interventional winemaking.

The result is a floral, pretty, clean, balanced whine, classic Chardonnay character that is better than just about anything from Chablis or the Macon at this price. Simply a perfect, affordable, everyday Chardonnay. So what’s the downside? Only a dozen cases are available, while they last. In stock now and ready to go – don’t wait, these will go fast! Cheers! Chris
