$39.97 on sale, $36.70 on six or more bottles! -Very Limited!
If you love the wines of Meursault but not the price, here is the answer! This small family domain, located in the village of Meursault, turns out some of the best village level Meursault on the market, but as stunning as they are, they don’t come cheap. (We are offering the 2018 Meursault tesson at $99.97 on sale – a great wine but not your everyday drinker!) The Bourgogne Vieilles Vignes (old vines) on offer today has true Meursault-like character and flavors at a fraction of the price!
Why is it so great? The first is the grapes, sourced from several very old parcels primarily in Meursault, including one that abuts the famous Premier Cru vineyard of Meursault Charmes (wines from which start at $100 and can cost thousands of dollars per bottle!). The second is the meticulous farming and winemaking of Jean Philippe Fichet, who pours as much passion and skill into making this wine as he does his much pricier Lieu dits.
What you get here is a true taste of Meursault at about one third of the price! Classy aromas of apple, with a stony cool element, lovely integrated oak, solid and fairly rich on the palate – complex and layered with beautiful acidit and minerality in the finish. Only five cases in stock!
One of my all time visits in Meursault was a late evening appointment with Jean Philippe Fichet at his pristine winery and cellar just on the edge of the village of Meursault. The reason behind the late hour is that Fichet spends his entire daylight hours in and among his vines, an effort that is part and parcel to the incredible quality of his wines. Back then he was still building his domain from the ground up, mainly by creating long term leasing and farming contracts for some of the best village level parcels in Meursault. He was barely an “up and coming” star, little known on the burgundy firmament. But tasting the wines that evening I knew he was destined for greatness. Today, his wines sell out almost immediately, snapped up by devoted private clients and top tier restaurants around the world.
We were already bracing for severe shortages coming down the road with the miniscule 2019 vintage, a year when frost decimated the vineyards, reducing production dramatically. But just last month we received this sad news from our importer: “Much of the Fichet winery burnt to the ground on the night of May 20th. Jean-Philippe has poured his heart and soul into bootstrapping this jewel box domain from nothing, including renovating much of his winery compound with his own two hands. It’s a devastating blow, and we wish him and Michele the best as they sort out the losses. The Fichets are special people, and those of you who know them surely share that assessment.”
The net result is that there will be very little wine from this tremendous producer and this may be our last shot of the Vieilles Vignes bourgogne for a year or two at least. Don’t miss the boat – only five cases on offer!!
