Gargiulo Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon G Major Seven Study 575 OVX 2016

“Deep ruby purple hue, lovely nose of ripe fruit, cassis, herbs, sandalwood and lovely oak are followed on the palate by a rich, warm, richly textured and layered mid-palate with deep fruit and lovely balance as well, supported by silky ripe tannins anda lovely oak compliment. Drink this now with a decant and over the next decade at least.”

I first met Jeff, his wife Valerie and daughter April when they were just starting out. Over lunch on the terrace overlooking their vineyard (and Screaming Eagle, adjacent just to the south), we enjoyed the wines with hand made pasta Jeff made early that morning and other assorted delicious pairings, and I got to know the story of how they got to this special vineyard. It takes them from their family tomato farm in Naples Florida, growing to become really BIG tomato farmers (in 1994 just before they sold the business Gargiulo Inc was responsible for about 10% of the entire country’s fresh tomato production), to selling the business and Jeff becoming CEO of Sunkist. But all he ever really wanted to do was play music, make wine and enjoy it with great food shared with family and friends. His success in those ventures eventually allowed him to pursue his dream.

They first purchased their Money Road vineyard, just up the Silverado trail, in 1992, selling the grapes to other wineries. In 2000 a phone call from a neighbor – Screaming Eagle owner Jean Philips (who was also a real estate agent!) called to tell them this rare piece of property was for sale. They purchased it, carefully planted with proper rootstocks and clones to best suit this special terroir on a small knoll, and began making their own wine.

The flagship 575 OVX vineyard is located in the eastern edge of Oakville, at the corner of Oakville Crossroad and the Silverado Trail (575 Oakville Cross Road – thus its name). This location, slightly elevated, has a unique mix of mineral rich andesite rock that is fractured just enough for iron enriched clay loam, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It is also one of the only south-facing hillside sites in the area, opening it up to cooling southerly afternoon breezes. The wine takes its name from a classic jazz guitar chord, and comes from Jeff’s passion for music. Like the chord’s (G Major 7th) four notes, this is a blend of four of the five classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Merlot.
