Just 9 bottles, or three three packs, are available of this incredible release from Gandona. While Gandona is relatively new on the scene, the property and vineyards are not. The region where it is grown is known as Pritchard Hill, a beautiful part of Napa in the Vaca mountains on the east side of the Napa Valley.

The area is named for Charles Pritchard who planted vines on a homestead in the 1880’s, today the location of the Chappellet winery which was the first winery here created in 1968. The parcel that makes up Gandona goes even farther back, having been homesteaded in 1862.

Gandona’s was planted shortly after Chappellet by Bob Long, a legendary early Napa Cab visionary, in the early 1970’s. Planted before regulations were enacted prohibiting steep vineyard plantinga, Gandona’s grandfathered sites can be almost a 40% grade. The soils here, well above the Valley floor are mainly iron rich, rocky red soils. Lay this one down in the cellar for 5-10 years, and enjoy it for a decade after that!!

Gandona Estate vineyards are carved from the steep terrain of Pritchard Hill and planted in small blocks, each with its own distinct personality. Each block is harvested in individual batches, isolating flavor variations and then blended to create the foundation for the rich, complex wines of Gandona Estate.

The 2016 Gandona Estate is aromatic and expressive with ripe blueberries, blackberry compote, violets, and cocoa nib taking center stage, underlain by notes of sweet earth, crushed rocks, and cigar box. With a dense and concentrated structure, it makes an impressive entrance, driving straight to the top with a pulsating acidity that elevates the fruit and holds its position front and center. Polished tannins build and round with time. The 2016 Gandona exudes power and finesse while still being light on its feet.
