Victor Huet was a Parisian bistro owner, who after WWI, resettled in the town of Vouvray, located in France’s beautiful Loire Valley. He soon purchased his first vineyard, Le Haut-Lieu, and Domaine Huet was born. Victor’s son, Gaston took over the estate in 1937 and built the legacy over the next 55 years despite spending five years in a German POW camp during WWII!

Under the direction of Gaston, the estate prospered. He secured two additional prime vineyards on the Premiere Cote: Le Mont and Clos du Bourg. These two, along with Le Haut-Lieu are the reasons that Domaine Huet is often considered the greatest of all Vouvray producers.

The estate was joined by some important players as the years passed. In 1979 Jean-Bernard Berthome joined, first working in vineyards and then in the cellar as the right hand of Noel Pinguet, the talented son-in-law of Gaston. Then in 2002, a financial partner, Anthony Hwang, was brought into the partnership. Today, the estate is run by Benjamin Joliveau. Under his direction, along with a passionate and competent supporting crew, Domaine Huet is making its most consistently great wines. Certified biodynamic since 1993, Huet is achieving the highest level of transparency, purity, and balance.

Gaston Huet believed that Clos du Bourg–the ancient, walled, 6 hectare vineyard–was the greatest of all Vouvray vineyards. It has the Premire Cote’s poorest, shallowest, stoniest soils, but the synthesis between Le Mont’s intense minerality and Le Haut-Lieu’s generous texture produce Huet’s most powerful wine. -Polaner Selections

The 2019 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec offers a deep, rich yet pure and refined, intensely aromatic, darker-toned nose with aromas of fully ripe stone and tropical fruit intertwined with earthy, chalky and yeasty notes that make up for further finesse and complexity. Full-bodied, round and fruity on the palate, this is a deep, intense, juicy, silky-textured yet tight, chalky, very complex, sustainably structured and persistently salty-mineral Chenin from old vines that give extra concentration as well as a spectacularly expressive character. This is a great, age-worthy Vouvray with fine tannins and lingering salty tension and finesse. What a finish! The 2019 needs a while to gain finesse and even more complexity. The wine served from the bottle that I tasted nine days before was incredibly amazing! The 2019 is a duty for all Chenin aficionados! 13.5% alcohol. 30,000 bottles made. Tasted in July 2020.

Dry, almost chalky, but giving, with beautiful acidity pumping energy into the flavors of Bosc pear, shaved ginger, Meyer lemon and honeysuckle. Silky in texture, with a subtle bite that firms this up. While this could be enjoyed now, it is still rather tightly wound and should unfurl nicely with age. Best from 2022 through 2034.

The 2019 Sec Clos du Bourg is a wine of stature and vertical build. There is real gravitas to the orchard fruit, spice and earthy flavors. Tasted blind, Clos du Bourg might be confused with a red wine such is its feeling of volume and structure. Far from an easygoing Vouvray, Clos du Bourg is a very serious wine. I loved it. In a word: marvelous. In three words: don’t miss it.
