LIke its rosé counterpart, the secret here lies in its vineyard source at an elevation of 825 meters in the sunny southeast of Spain. Most of the region here is harsh, hot and dry, but it is much cooler at this altitude, with big diurnal temperature swings that slows down ripening, allowing sugars, acid, and tannins to all ripen in harmony.

Made from old vine Monastrell (Mourvedre), a blending grape in the south of France and the main variety in the solid, long lived reds of Bandol in Provence, this wine is very much on the same vein as those much pricier counterparts. Big, bold and complex far beyond its modest price tag, this is the perfect red with lamb or a fresh ham this Easter, or with everything from roasted chicken, duck breast, pork, or burgers and steaks on the grill. The Olivares’ family vineyard, Finca Hoya de Santa Ana, is a very special place. It is planted at 825 meters on very sandy soil with a high percentage of chalk. There are also a very high percentage of old vines, with the oldest planted in 1872. Because of the sandy soils of the region, the old, ungrafted, bush-pruned vines at the Bodega never succumbed to phyloxerra. Given the vine age, the high elevation which provides cool nights, and that high percentage of chalk, the resuting wines provide a great combination of good concentration and complexity, along with balanced freshness and structure.

Vinous 91
Opaque ruby. Deep-pitched dark berry, violet and licorice aromas are energized by a spicy nuance that builds in the glass. Broad and seamless on the palate, offering appealingly sweet blackberry and cherry flavors that show fine definition and back-end lift. Closes long and lively, with smooth tannins coming in late to add shape and gentle grip.

Wine Advocate 90
The red 2018 Altos de la Hoya was produced with Monastrell grapes from old ungrafted vines. It has a creamy and balsamic touch with sweet spices intermixed with ripe berry fruit and notes of pencil lead and licorice, with the fruit being black rather than red. The palate is juicy and round, with very fine tannins and some creamy oak in the finish. Pleasant and easy to drink and understand. 200,000 bottles produced.
