If you love red Burgundy but not the high prices it can command, THIS is your wine! From Rockstar winemaker Ciprian Arlaud this overachieving Bourgogne rouge packs a lot of punch into its $22 price tag. This delicious Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from the negociant arm of the famed Domaine Arlaud. It is 100% Biodynamically farmed grapes from 40+ year old vines in the high rent district of the Cote de Nuits. Half of the vineyards are in Morey St Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, and Vougeot, the other half are in Hautes Côtes de Nuits and Côtes de Nuits. It is aged in 6-7 year old barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wine takes its name from one of the first horses, Oka, that Ciprian and his sister used when they switched to biodynamic and began plowing by horse. Oka worked with them for years, doing his part keeping the vineyards un-compacted and healthy, and earning his name on the bottle!.
It has a beautiful ruby hue, full aromas of earth, red and dark cherry, deep and rich on the palate with the power of the 2018 vintage shining through and through. Serious depth and layers of beautiful dark Pinot fruit and Burgundian character abound. Drink this now and over the next 4-5 years at least! This overachiever is all you can ask for in a classy, affordable and delicious Burgundy!
Cyprien sums it up with the following description of this super wine: “The 2018 OKA Is the type of Bourgogne Rouge that I love. It has a beautifully accessible and exuberant Pinot Noir fruit with a complexity and elegance that, in 2018, delivers a high level of quality. It is almost more like a Premier Cru, with fine tannins and a layered texture of fruit that is rarely found in a Bourgogne. The fruit is 100% from the Cote d’Or and in the future it will be labeled as Bourgogne Côte d’Or.” -Cyprien Arlaud
“2018 is one of the most beautiful years ever for Bourgogne level wines. We had perfect maturity from each of our vineyards for Oka, which are all from tremendous Côte d’Or sites. The fruit, which came from vines that average 40+ years old, was very balanced, rich, and deliciously full. In 2018 it was really almost like premier cru quality, with the extra sun and clay/limestone soils delivering some of the greatest Bourgogne fruit we have ever had. The exuberance of the Pinot noir was something special.” -Cyprien Arlaud
