Albert Boxler Riesling Reserve 2017

Domaine Albert Boxler absolutely launches it out of the park with this late release of their stunning Riesling Reserve 2017, a dry, mineral laden, mind blowing white wine from one of the top winemakers in Alsace!

If you typically shy away from Riesling, this is the time to put all that aside and jump in with both feet. To my fellow lovers of this incredible grape do not miss out on this one! A library release direct from the cool Boxler cellars in the picture perfect village of Niedermorschwihr in the foothills of the Vosges, this 2017 Riesling Reserve is absolute textbook! It’s cool, focused and intense, with citrus, ginger, and green apple aromas that explode from the glass. All of that is amplified on the palate, a pure, brilliant dry wine, with incredible minerality, a deep fruit core yet with laser focus and beautiful supporting acidity into its long, tightly wound finish

In Europe this wine is labeled as Sommerberg JV, as it is essentially made from the young vines of the Sommerberg Grand Cru vineyard, one of the best Riesling sites in the world. It is all granite soil, the grapes are harvested by hand, there is no fining, cold settling before fermentation begins, fermentation is natural, and it is vinified in large wooden foudres.

At almost $40 per bottle less than the Sommerberg Grand Cru, this wine is truly just about as good as its much pricier big brother. The Boxler family has been growing grapes and making wine here since the 1670s, no wonder they get it so right all the time, crafting some of the finest examples of Riesling in the world. It’s a perfect summer white with all kinds of fish, Asian cuisine, salads, appetizers of all sorts, chicken, pork, and of course all on its own. You can drink it now or you can safely age this for a decade at least.

92 Points Vinous Media – “right straw-green. Ginger dominates the fresh fruit and botanical-herb-driven nose. Then ripe and juicy, offering apple and fresh citrus flavors of sneaky concentration. Finishes very long and saline, featuring a repeating ginger note (a sign deriving from the combination of ripe Riesling grapes and granite soils). This will likely age well. More refined and deeper than the entry-level Riesling, and a real knockout. In Europe this wine is labeled “Sommerberg JV” (where JV stands for Jeunes Vignes).”
