A Collection of My Favorite White Burgundies

Burgundy is the region where the Chardonnay grape earned its wings as one of the all time great white wine grapes.

It is one of my favorite sources for white wine, and I am a relentless promoter of its wines. One of my employees when he first experienced the wines at an after work tasting simply uttered the words “Burgundy is the light”. Amen brother!

The combination of exceptional terroir – limestone, marls and sand – a moderate climate, and centuries of winemaking tradition all play a role. It is also a very diverse region, with sparkling cremant de bourgogne, crisp, mineral chablis, complex and layered whites from Puligny, Corton, Meursault and Chassagne, and tons of value priced Macon wine, Côte Chalonnaise wines and Bourgognes Blanc. Prices for these terrific expressions of the Chardonnay grape range from everyday affordable to outrageously expensive. Here are a handful of our current favorites.

Pretty soon we will be doing this in person – keep an eye open for our opening dates next month!!

Denis (Isabelle et Denis) Pommier Petit Chablis Hauterivien 2019
"From the first time I met this husband and wife winemaking team about a decade ago, I have been a huge fan of their wines. From their Petit Chablis to their incredible Premier Crus, they produce lovely expressions of Chardonnay that the cool northern Burgundian climate and Kimmeridgian limestone soils provide. The wines are focused and crisp, yet never tart or austere, with lovely green apple and stone fruit notes that are supported by racy acidity, minerality and very little, if any, oak."The wines from this area tend to be ever so slightly more generous on the palate in terms...

Ballot-Millot & Fils Meursault 2019
"Charles Ballot took the helm of his family's already respected domaine, and began to make his mark by moving to more natural farming methods, reducing yields, buying a triage table, and updating the press.Today, the estate is comprised of 10 hectares of vineyards, seven of which are in Meursault proper. The holdings are reputable and the relative vine age is old: Perrières (40+ years), Genevrières (70+ years), Narvaux (45-60year), etc.Charles's wines tend toward the so-called “Roulot-school” of Meursault, more tensile and racy, as opposed to the fatter, honeyed and nutty style that dominated the landscape 20-30 years ago." -Polaner Selections
Domaine de Montille Bourgogne Blanc Clos du Château de Puligny-Montrachet 2017
“The 2017 Bourgogne exudes Puligny classiness, from its brilliantly focused aromas to its mineral laden fruit, bright, crisp tones, solid fruit core, although to its long, precise finish. Fermented in demi-muids (large 600 liter oak casks) to keep oak integrated and subtle, it is balanced and polished, showing a pedigree well beyond its “Bourgogne” level appellation.” - Chris Cree MW, Cree Wine Company
Domaine Rémi Jobard Bourgogne Côte d’Or Vieilles Vignes 2019
2019, Bourgogne Côte d’Or Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Rémi Jobard 87-90, Inside Burgundy, Jasper Morris MW **** Four/Five Star Rating- All domaine, made from nine plots of, which three are in Les Pellands. All but one plot is over 40 years old. Clear, pure colour and a noticeably more refined nose, in a different league from the straight Bourgogne. Crystalline. The wine fattens out just a little at the back, but this is very classy and exceptionally long for Bourgogne Blanc, with the faintest sucrosity. Tasted: October 2020""All of Rémi’s wines show a breathtaking clarity of terroir, which come from the...

Fichet Meursault Tesson Lieu-Dit 2018
(92-94) Points, Vinous Media“The 2018 Meursault Le Tesson has another very pretty and endearing bouquet with white flower mixed with orange pith and nectarine aromas, a hint of pop corn in the background. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and linear. The saline finish conveys brightness and energy. This is another impressive 2018 from Fichet.”

Burgundy was the winiest wine, the central, essential, and typical wine, the soul and greatest common measure of all the kindly wines of the earth.
